According to the Maine Cardiovascular Health Program, cardiovascular disease is the #1 cause of death in Maine. Did you know that if you receive treatment within 1 hour of first starting to have symptoms of a heart attack you have a 50% higher chance of surviving?

What Does This Mean?

It means that it is VERY important to know the warning signs of a heart attack and to call 911 if you or anyone around you shows even ONE symptom listed below.

Know the signs of a heart attack and call 911 immediately if you experience any ONE of these warning signs.

Common heart attack symptoms seen in both Men and Women:

·        Chest pain or discomfort
·        Pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck, or back
·        Feeling weak, lightheaded, faint, or sweaty
·        Pain or discomfort in the arms or shoulders
·        Shortness of breath

Women often report symptoms of discomfort rather than pain including:

·        Discomfort or pressure in the chest
·        Pain in one or both arms, upper back, neck, jaw, or stomach
·        Nausea or vomiting
·        Trouble breathing
·        Breaking out in a cold sweat
·        Dizziness or lightheadedness
·        Inability to sleep
·        Unusual fatigue
·        Paleness or clammy skin

Women are more likely to ignore or be unaware they are having a heart attack because they often do not experience the classic warning signs.
